Panoramic Views of the Hudson River - Once you reach the summit of Bear Mountain, you’ll be treated to some of the most spectacular views in the Hudson Valley. From the top, you’ll have a clear view of the Hudson River, with the rolling hills of the Highlands and the Bear Mountain Bridge below. On a clear day, you can even see the distant skyline of New York City! This vantage point is perfect for taking a break, snapping some photos, and soaking in the beauty of the region.

Appalachian Trail Section - One of the coolest things about the Bear Mountain Loop is that it includes a section of the famous Appalachian Trail (AT). After the climb, the trail levels out and offers a more gradual descent.

Major Welch Trail: The first part of the loop takes you along the Major Welch Trail, which is known for its steep stone steps and challenging ascent. This section is tough, but the views from the top are unbeatable.

Appalachian Trail: After reaching the summit, you’ll join the Appalachian Trail for your descent. This part of the loop is less steep, offering a peaceful and scenic walk through the woods as you make your way down the mountain.

If you’re hiking in the summer, try to start early in the day to avoid the heat, as the initial ascent can be quite strenuous. Winter hikes are possible too, but be cautious of icy conditions on the rocky sections.

Tips for Hiking the Bear Mountain Loop - Bring Plenty of Water: The steep climb will definitely make you thirsty, so make sure to bring enough water, especially in warmer weather.

Why I Love the Bear Mountain Loop - For me, the Bear Mountain Loop offers the perfect balance of challenge and reward.
