When the Shift Follows You Into Bed

There are nights when exhaustion is present, but rest still feels far away.

You lie down. The room is quiet. The day is technically over.

And still, your mind keeps moving.

Pieces of the shift continue replaying. Conversations return. Tasks resurface. Your nervous system remains partially alert.

Even while your body is trying to rest.

Caregiving work often asks people to remain highly responsive for long stretches of time. And sometimes the body leaves that state more slowly than expected.

Especially after emotionally intense days. Especially after prolonged overstimulation.

You may feel frustrated with yourself. Wonder why you cannot fully shut it off.

But your nervous system is not malfunctioning. It is adjusting after sustained activation.

You are allowed to recognize that decompression does not always happen immediately.

And you are allowed to move gently through the nights when your mind is slower to settle.

Rest is not failure simply because it arrives gradually.

Take care of yourself.

I’ll be here when you’re ready.
